Job summary

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is seeking a referral coordinator to ensure timely coordination and accurate processing of patient referrals for medical specialty visits. You will liaise between insurance and providers to promote patient safety and efficient care.

The role requires an associate degree (or equivalent) with related experience, plus familiarity with EMR systems. Prior authorizations and patient communication are key components of the position, which offers day shifts

Qualifications

  • Associate degree plus one year of experience directly related to the processing of patient referrals.
  • High school diploma or GED plus three years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant.
  • High school diploma or GED plus five years of experience directly related to patient registration, patient scheduling, patient billing/collections, the processing of prior authorizations, and/or the processing of patient referrals.

Responsibilities

  • Track and document patient referrals to promote team awareness and patient safety.
  • Assemble patient demographics, insurance payer and health data.
  • Manage insurance/payer prior authorizations.
  • Provide patient and family communication, navigation and advocacy through referrals.
  • Maintain communication with service providers and community services.

Visa Information

TTUHSC, at its sole discretion, may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions in accordance with the directive issued by Governor Abbott. Approval from the Texas Workforce Commission is required. On a limited, case-by-case basis, the institution may also sponsor eligible individuals for change-of-status or change-of-employer petitions for qualifying positions. TTUHSC will not pay the $100,000 fee, if applicable.

Position Description

Serve as a liaison between insurance and health care providers to ensure the timely coordination, and accurate processing, of patient referrals required for medical specialty visits.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Tracking and documentation of patients referrals to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety.
  • Assemble patient demographics, insurance/payer adn health data.
  • Insurance/payer prior authorization.
  • Provide patient and family communication, navigation, and advocacy through the referral process.
  • Establish and maintain communication and relationships with identified service providers and community services.
  • Update patient records with demographics, insurance and information on specialist consults, hospitalizations, ER visits and community organizations related to thier health.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree plus one (1) year of experience directly related to the processing of patient referrals;
  • OR High school diploma or GED plus three (3) years of experience working as a Certified Medical Assistant;
  • OR High school diploma or GED plus five (5) years of experience directly related to patient registration, patient scheduling, patient billing/collections, the processing of prior authorizations, and/or the processing of patient referrals.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a clinical environment.
  • Previous experience with EMR systems
  • Previous experience with insurance companies in a healthcare setting
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish
