Job summary

New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark seeks a part-time Teacher Assistant/Tutor to support students in mathematics, reading and writing. You will work with program instructors to provide academic assistance and help students meet college-level expectations.

The role requires background check clearance; hours run during the Academic Year (Mon–Thu, with occasional Fridays) and six-week Summer Sessions, with some Saturday sessions. Compensation is $16–$30 per hour.

Qualifications

• Completion of the equivalent coursework of a college sophomore (24 credits) and current enrollment in good academic standing, or graduation from an accredited college or university.
• Education/experience prerequisites may be waived if an equivalent combination can be demonstrated.

Responsibilities

• Assist students in integrating mathematics, reading, and writing skills.
• Maintain accurate academic records, program statistics, and student files.
• Help students develop communication, study, time management, and test-taking skills.
• Support students in preparation for state-mandated assessments (PARCC, PSAT, SAT, ACT).
• Attend required staff development and training sessions.
• Help create a positive learning environment encouraging engagement and success.
• Assist with administration and evaluation of diagnostic and placement assessments.
• Implement emergency lesson plans in the absence of an instructor.
