Job summary

New Jersey Institute of Technology seeks a part-time Teacher Assistant/Tutor to support students in math, reading and writing, under the NJ GEARUP / College Bound program. The role emphasizes helping students develop study skills, time management, and test-preparation strategies, in alignment with state requirements and the program schedule.

You will maintain academic records, assist instructors, and participate in staff trainings, with hours during fall, spring, and summer sessions.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should have completed the equivalent course load of a sophomore in college (24 credits) and be a student in good academic standing or a college graduate.
  • Education and experience prerequisites may be accepted at the university's discretion, where the candidate can demonstrate readiness for the position.
  • Related work and/or volunteer experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Helps to assist students in integrating math, reading and writing skills.
  • Maintains accurate academic records, program statistics on use of student resources and files.
  • Assists in developing students' communicative, study and time management skills and assists in the development of test-taking strategies.
  • Helps students to build confidence in subject areas and helps develop student problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Helps students develop math, science, reading and language skills in preparation for state mandated tests (PARCC, PSAT, SAT/ACT or equivalent).
  • Attends all staff development and training sessions.
  • Assists in creating a learning environment that will facilitate the desire to learn and help students to gain self-motivation for self-improvement.
  • Assists in the administration and evaluation of standardized diagnostic and placement tests.
  • Administers an emergency lesson plan in the absence of an instructor.

Job description

Teacher Assistant/Tutor

Department: NJ GEARUP / College Bound / UBELLs

Reports To: Director NJ Gear UP/College Bound

Position Type: Staff

Position Summary: The position of Teacher Assistant/Tutor means an overall commitment to the policies and procedures of the New Jersey GEAR UP/College Bound program. Employment and/or continued employment is subject to successfully passing State Mandated Criminal Background Check. Teacher Assistants/Tutors are important members of the academic team that advises students of the program. They work collectively with program instructors to provide relevant assistance in academic classes per the grade level of the students that will ensure a progressively collegiate focus to their class schedules. The program operates year‑round during the Academic Year (fall and spring) and Summer Sessions (July‑Mid August). Fall and Spring Sessions are Monday through Thursday (Occasional Fridays) from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm and/or 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm. Saturday Sessions are 20 sessions during the Academic Year from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Note: Academic Year weekday school hours are adjusted as needed per school. Summer Session is currently up to six (6) weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 am until 3:00 pm with occasional Saturday events. The Summer Session is six (6) weeks, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 am until 3:00 pm. Hours may be adjusted as needed.

Prerequisite Qualifications
  • Applicants should have completed the equivalent course load of a sophomore in college (24 credits) and be a student in good academic standing or a college graduate.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted, where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university and an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Related work and/or volunteer experience is preferred but not required.
Salary Information

In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the hourly rate/range for this position is $16.00–$30.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
