Welder - Structural

This position requires joining steel components or metal plates using blueprints, work orders, welding procedures, or oral instructions through the application of heat or electric arc-welding equipment. Additional duties may be assigned.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes.
• Join pipes from torch to tanks of oxygen and fuel gas, turning valves to release the mixture.
• Adjust flame temperature, size, and color by burning torch and regulating gas and air flow.
• Preheat workpieces for welding or curving using a torch.
• Fill holes or correct mistakes in lead pieces; make bulges thin and curves in metal workpieces.
• Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal; clean or degrease weld joints or workplace using wire brush, grinder, or chemical bath.
• Remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag, and spatter using carbon arc gouge, hand scraper, grinder, or power chipper.
• Climb ladders or work on scaffolds as needed.
• Select welding locations based on type, thickness, area, and expected temperature of the metal to protect the torch.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
