Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Consultant Structural Engineer to join our Property and Buildings Team across Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City. You will perform structural engineering work under supervision, coordinating with architects, contractors, and clients and managing projects.

The role emphasizes designing new and existing structures, retrofitting for resilience, advanced modeling, and producing technical reports to support decision-making while upholding codes and quality standards.

Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering.
Engineer in Training Certification.
Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and application to project work-related issues.
Detailed understanding of seismic design procedures, ductility, and mechanics of different building materials.
Basic knowledge of linear and non-linear finite element analysis and performance-based design.
Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; including rehabilitation and new design.
Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
Knowledge of sustainability and reducing hazardous substances.
Knowledge of structural/civil laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping.
Excellent communication skills and ability to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Self-leadership with attention to detail and multi-tasking.
Ability to learn new techniques, work independently, and follow policy.
Proficiency with technical writing, software, math, and predictive models.
Active participation in local professional organizations.
Experience with design software (ETABS, RAM, SAP, Revit, AutoCAD, etc.).
Critical thinking and problem-solving from data analysis.
Upholding safety policies.
Ability to work schedules beyond typical workweek.
Occasional travel may be required.

Responsibilities

Perform structural engineering work relating to the design of new concrete, CMU, steel, metal stud, light-frame wood, and mass timber structures for residential, institutional, and commercial projects.
Develop structural engineering solutions to facilitate re-use of existing building structures through retrofitting or resiliency assessments.
Incorporate modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies for safety and functionality.
Contribute to project coordination through meetings, BIM modeling, and site logs.
Prepare data and visualizations for interpretation and presentation of results.
Maintain quality control standards for measurements, analysis, and reporting.
Assist with development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects.
Contribute to technical reports and presentations to address design/construction issues.
Conduct engineering studies and surveys for future needs.
Assist in data interpretation and action plans for risk mitigation.
Help implement HASPs and health and safety plans.
Collaborate with engineers and authorities on municipal and private projects.
Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
