Job summary

The City of Valdosta is seeking a hands-on Street Maintenance Worker to operate trucks, light equipment, and related machinery. You will transport equipment, mow, apply herbicides in drainage ditches, and help repair and maintain streets and stormwater systems.

You will also patch asphalt, assist with traffic control at work sites, conduct pre- and post-trip inspections, and communicate with dispatchers to coordinate daily work efforts.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and drainage system maintenance.
• Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
• Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks and light equipment.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Experience through apprenticeship/internship or 1–2 years in a similar role.
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Responsibilities

• Operate a truck and trailer to transport equipment and materials to and from work sites.
• Operate a bush hog and other mowing equipment.
• Operate a tractor to apply herbicides to drainage ditches.
• Operate and maintain a variety of equipment used in the repair and maintenance of streets.
• Patch asphalt and fill potholes.
• Maintain radio contact with dispatchers to send and receive information.
• Maintain assigned vehicles and equipment; perform pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Assist in traffic control at work sites.
• Perform related duties.
