Job summary

Valdosta Police Department seeks a maintenance worker to operate heavy equipment for streets, stormwater, and trees. You will drive and operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, and bulldozers, and perform vehicle inspections.

Responsibilities include tree trimming, debris removal, traffic control, and installing holiday decorations. Requires high school diploma, Georgia driver’s license, and 1–2 years related experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of street, tree, and stormwater maintenance techniques, equipment and supplies.
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of city geography and street names.
• Ability to operate assigned vehicles, trucks and heavy equipment.
• Ability to prioritize and organize work.
• Ability to use hand and power tools.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic math.
• Experience relevant to duties (apprenticeship/internship or 1–2 years).
• Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operates backhoe, excavator, front-end loader, bulldozer and other equipment for street and stormwater maintenance.
• Transports equipment, tools and supplies to work sites.
• Trims and prunes trees; removes debris; installs trees and landscaping.
• Maintains vehicles and equipment; conducts pre/post-trip inspections.
• Assists in traffic control at work sites.
• Installs and removes holiday decorations.
• Performs related duties.
