Job summary

City of Valdosta is seeking a skilled Equipment Operator to perform heavy equipment operations for street, stormwater, and tree maintenance. The role includes operating backhoe, excavator, loader, and bulldozer, inspecting vehicles, and assisting with traffic control at work sites.

Responsibilities include transporting gear to sites, trimming trees, removing debris, and installing landscaping while adhering to safety policies and city geography knowledge.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of street, tree, and stormwater system maintenance techniques and equipment.
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of city geography, including streets and locations.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Experience typically 1–2 years in similar duties or completion of an apprenticeship/internship.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment (backhoe, excavator, front-end loader, bulldozer) for street, stormwater, and tree maintenance.
• Transports equipment, tools, and supplies to work sites.
• Trims and prunes trees; removes debris; installs trees and landscaping.
• Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and routine maintenance.
• Assists in traffic control at work sites and installs/removes decorations.
