Job summary

Sun Life U.S. is seeking a Senior Manager, Stop Loss Underwriting to lead a multi-site Manual Underwriters team, manage daily inventory, rushes, and partner expectations in a hybrid model across the contiguous states and AK.

You will hire, coach, onboard staff, provide ongoing training, champion process improvements, and ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines while building a high‑performing, engaged team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent, with 5+ years in Medical Stop Loss or operations.
• Experience leading an operations team or technical lead.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills across Underwriting, Sales and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day operations of Medical Stop Loss manual underwriting team, assign workloads, manage priorities and rush requests, answer complex underwriting questions, and ensure productivity and service standards.
• Collaborate with senior Underwriting and Sales leaders to align the team's work with business objectives, underwriting guidelines, and partner expectations.
• Lead interviewing, selection, and onboarding of Manual Underwriters and temporary staff.
• Provide ongoing training, coaching, and mentoring for new hires and temporary resources, and update policies and procedures.
• Implement underwriting process and practice improvements identified through Quality Control reviews.
• Build a high-performing, engaged team by recognizing success, setting expectations, addressing performance concerns, and developing actionable plans.
• Promote compliant, consistent, and efficient underwriting practices across the team.
• Support Training and Development to strengthen underwriting knowledge and career growth.
• Ensure Manual Underwriters apply guidelines with sound judgment and independent decision‑making.
