Job summary

The Conference Board in New York City is seeking an Associate Director of Human Resources to lead a lean HR team. Reporting to the CHRO, you will guide day-to-day operations, partner on compensation and talent strategies, and act as a strategic advisor to executive leadership.

Ideal candidates bring a seasoned HR generalist background, with experience in nonprofit or mission-driven environments, and a hands-on, business-partner mindset. This exempt role requires strong in-office presence in NYC.

Qualifications

• Ten+ years of progressive HR generalist experience; breadth and depth are important.
• Experience in lean, small-team environments (startup, nonprofit, or fast-growth).
• Experience in mission-driven or nonprofit organizations is a plus.
• Some people management experience; manager level or above not required if scope shows equivalent responsibility.
• Deep HR generalist depth: employee relations, compensation, talent management, recruitment, onboarding, and HR administration.

Responsibilities

• Run day-to-day HR team operations and direct a U.S.-based team; coordinate with International HR.
• Manage complex employee relations cases across the organization.
• Partner with the CHRO on compensation planning and updating internal pay bands.
• Participate in talent reviews, succession planning, and workforce strategy discussions.
• Lead difficult conversations with senior leaders with diplomacy and sound judgment.
• Oversee recruiting, onboarding, HR reporting, and data integrity across manual systems.
• Lead the HR team during high-volume periods and run regular stand-up meetings.
• Manage internal communications and change management with the CHRO and marketing/communications.
• Contribute to HRIS and process improvement efforts as AI capabilities are built.
