Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Sterile Processing Department Supervisor to lead a team across decontamination, sterilization, and instrument assembly. You will oversee scheduling, training, and performance evaluations, while ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with standards.

The role requires strong supervisory and communication skills, with a focus on efficiency and patient safety in a fast-paced hospital environment. Evening shifts and on-call duties are part of the schedule.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED certification.
• Current certification as a certified Central Processing Tech by a recognized certification agency.
• CHL or CSPM certification within 12 months of hire as a condition of employment at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
• Minimum of two years as a SPD Technician, SPD Technician Senior or Surgical Technologist experience and/or comparable supervisory experience.
• Expert knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, inventory management & case cart management.
• Proficient oral and written (English language) communication skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency in computers.
• Must have effective interpersonal skills to work well with others.

Responsibilities

• Directs and supervises assigned personnel. Performs performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and grievances within position responsibilities.
• Plans and coordinates activity in Sterile Processing: equipment, decontamination, processing, instrument assembly, sterilization, and cart assembly.
• Supervises the operation and effectiveness of equipment and takes corrective action in a timely manner.
• Coordinates cleaning, sterilizing, inspecting, storing, and distribution of sterile articles, including instrumentation and case carts to/from Emergency Department, Main Operating Room, Day Surgery Unit, ORs, Inpatient Nursing, Labor and Delivery Units and Ambulatory Clinics.
• Verifies required documentation (sterilizer printouts, BI incubator logs and charts) and corrects staff performance as indicated.
