Job summary

Luna Community College is seeking a Rough Rider Mentorship Teacher to support a multi-disciplinary after-school program for K-12 students. You will design activities, manage classrooms, and help students bridge academic gaps through STEAHM-based lessons, experiments, and hands-on projects.

You will work under the mentorship program director, travel to the Las Vegas main campus occasionally for supplies, and communicate with parents about program activities and student progress.

Qualifications

  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Ability to supervise children of all ages.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Interdisciplinary Knowledge: General aptitude or interest in the STEAHM pillars.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to use basic hand tools (Trades), scientific lab equipment (Medicine/Science), and digital software (Technology/Math).
  • Pedagogical Skill: Ability to simplify complex concepts for K-12 age groups.

Responsibilities

  • Program Creation/Facilitation; Project Oversight Project Facilitation: Manages an After‑School Program with a focus on STEAHM (Science and Sociology, Technology and Trades, Engineering, Art and Allied Health, Humanities, Math and Medicine)-based lessons; helps students execute complex projects such as engineering builds, artistic creations, or scientific experiments.
  • Designs age‑appropriate activities for the students enrolled in the program
  • Enrolls students in the program using the provided enrollment packet
  • Takes weekly roll of students attending the program and shares this information with the Rough Rider Mentorship Program Director.
  • Evaluates students at the end of each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and completes the required co‑curricular assessment forms and submits them to the Mentorship Program Director by the specified deadline(s).
  • Occasionally travels to main campus in Las Vegas to pick up supplies, snacks, etc.
  • Posts informative communication about the program.
  • Calls parents when necessary about matters involving the program or student matters
  • Opens and closes Luna facility where the program is held
  • Does the occasional RP (Requisition for Purchase) or memo for items needed for the program
  • Makes phone calls and does other leg work necessary to conduct the week’s lesson(s) and promote the program.
  • Small Group Leadership: Facilitates breakout groups of K-12 students to ensure they understand project steps and safety protocols.
  • Lab & Shop Safety: Provides vigilant oversight during hands‑on activities, ensuring all students follow safety guidelines.
  • Experiment Support: Set up, tear down, and maintain materials for daily experiments and activities across the STEAHM spectrum.
  • Mentorship and Student Engagement
  • Differentiated Support: Identify students struggling with specific concepts (e.g., Math or History) and provide one‑on‑one, in‑the‑moment tutoring/mentoring to keep them on track with the group project.
  • Coordinate annual open enrollment, including system configuration and employee communication.
  • Engagement: Encourage student curiosity and participation; serve as a positive role model for younger students exploring higher education environments.
  • Administrative and Operations Reporting: Report both attendance and co‑curricular assessment paperwork meant to track student attendance and participation and success; provide feedback to the Program Director on project efficacy.
