Job summary

ModMed is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to act as a technical anchor across our engineering organization. You will guide architecture, set standards, and drive the technical direction of core platforms.

This IC role still mentors engineers and partners with Product and Engineering leadership to enable AI-driven capabilities. You will lead across squads on distributed systems, ensure scalability and security, and contribute 40–50% of your time to hands-on coding.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3+ years at Senior/Lead/Staff level.
• Deep expertise in Java (8/11/17+), memory management and multithreading.
• Expert knowledge of Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring Security.
• Extensive AWS design experience with ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, RDS, DynamoDB.
• Proven distributed systems architecture experience and RESTful/gRPC APIs.
• Strong cross-functional leadership and mentoring across squads.
• SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL modeling.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive technical strategy and architecture for healthcare applications.
• Stay hands-on ~40-50% coding, implement critical-path code and POCs.
• Lead coding standards, design patterns, and quality gates across squads.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through code reviews and design discussions.
• Champion DevOps practices and ensure reliability, observability, and performance of production systems.
• Collaborate with Product Managers to assess feasibility and trade-offs.
• Architect AI training/evaluation harnesses and domain-specific AI skills.
