Job summary

IBM is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Secure Compute Platform team to build and evolve a next-generation, multi-tenant, cloud-native compute platform that safely runs trusted and untrusted workloads at scale. The platform spans across AWS, Azure, and GCP with a Kubernetes-based runtime and a unified API surface.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of backend/infrastructure or platform software experience in production.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills in fast-paced environments.
• Deep expertise in Kubernetes, including controllers, operators, multi-region/multi-cluster architectures.
• Strong programming skills in Go, Scala, C++ or other statically typed languages.
• Experience with multi-tenant platform architectures and security/isolation patterns.
• Hands-on experience with secure container runtimes and Linux internals.
• Experience with troubleshooting and performance optimization of containerized workloads.
• Familiarity with gRPC, Protobuf, and service-to-service API design.
• Experience with public cloud platforms: AWS, GCP, Azure.
• Strong collaboration across Product, SRE/Operations, Security, and Engineering teams.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and mentorship across architecture and execution.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical direction for Secure Compute, including architecture and security models for trusted/untrusted workloads at scale.
• Design and implement platform APIs and Kubernetes controllers/operators in Go for workload lifecycle management and isolation.
• Partner with product and platform teams to shape the Secure Compute roadmap for customer-facing capabilities.
• Lead initiatives in workload scheduling, failure handling, networking architectures, deployment strategies, and fleet-wide resource management.
• Drive technical reviews and align architecture with broader platform objectives while ensuring security by default.
• Mentor engineers through design guidance, code reviews, and best-practice promotion for secure, scalable platform development.
• Own operational excellence for Secure Compute services, including availability, reliability, performance, SLOs, on-call ops, and disaster recovery.
