Job summary

Axon seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer, Communications Hardware, to own mechanical design from concept through high-volume production for rugged wireless devices. This is a remote-eligible, relocation-assisted, hybrid position with onsite work in New York City, Boston, or Scottsdale.

You’ll partner with ID, EE, RF, Product, and Manufacturing to balance durability, sealing, thermal, RF, and ergonomic needs while driving robust production-ready designs.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of mechanical product design experience, ideally within ruggedized devices.
  • 5+ years of technical leadership experience, including leading teams of 3+ mechanical engineers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience designing plastic injection molding, die casting, stamping, machining, adhesives, and bonded joints.
  • Strong capabilities in tolerance analysis, prototyping, and physical validation.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design from concept through high-volume production for compact, ruggedized hardware.
  • Develop designs balancing size, weight, durability, sealing, thermal and RF performance, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Design complex components and assemblies using plastic injection molding, stamping, die casting, machining, adhesives, and bonded joints.
  • Build and analyze high-fidelity prototypes; validate designs via FEA, tolerance analysis, and testing.
  • Design for harsh field environments with IP66/IP68 protection; ensure ruggedization.
  • Coordinate electro-mechanical integration across PCB/PCBA, batteries, antennas, and internal components.
  • Develop passive thermal-management solutions for compact form factors.
  • Improve ergonomics for carry and wear; support one-handed operation.
  • Collaborate with RF and electrical engineers on antennas and wireless systems; support FCC/IC certification.
  • Translate product requirements into measurable mechanical engineering targets; lead validation planning.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, FEA, and tests to mitigate design risks before production.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews; communicate risks and trade-offs clearly.
