Job summary

Affirm is seeking an experienced backend leader to set technical strategy and drive scalable systems. You will partner with product, design and analytics to ensure sustainable architectures and manage risks across the product lifecycle.

You will own reliability, including monitoring, on-call rotations, and playbooks, while promoting quality through code reviews and design standards. You will mentor engineers and help grow talent within the team.

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with Python or Kotlin.
• Experience building highly available distributed systems (AWS, MySQL, Spark, Kubernetes).
• Able to navigate ambiguity and understand architecture from low-level language idioms to large systems.
• Proven track record of gathering and iterating feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication for global collaboration.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year-long horizon and align with critical business projects.
• Collaborate with product management, design and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks.
• Act as a force-multiplier through defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own your team’s reliability, monitoring, on-call rotations, runbooks, and testing to keep the lights on.
• Foster a culture of quality by setting code review standards and sharing them beyond your team.
• Mentor and develop team members through feedback and leading by example.
