Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Identity Decisioning) to lead backend systems at scale in a remote US setting. You’ll shape long-term technical strategy for identity decisioning across markets, collaborating with product, design and analytics to ensure robust, scalable services.

You will drive architectural decisions, own critical operations, and mentor teammates while promoting quality and ownership across the team, with emphasis on reliability and cross-functional impact.

Qualifications

• 8+ years designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with distributed systems and modern tech stacks (Python or Kotlin).
• Strong communication and ability to influence cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long horizon.
• Collaborate with product, design and analytics to ensure scalable, reliable solutions.
• Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own team operations, monitoring, playbooks, testing and on-call readiness.
• Mentor and develop team members while promoting code quality and architecture standards.
