Job summary

Affirm is seeking a senior backend engineer to lead scalable systems and drive technical strategy across the team. You will own design decisions, mentor engineers, and partner with product, design, and analytics to deliver reliable, high-availability services.

You’ll work in a remote-first environment with flexible arrangements, contributing to architecture across AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required, with 8+ years in backend development.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience building highly available distributed systems.
• Ability to define technical and execution plans for major features or deprecations.
• Strong communication with global engineering teams.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field.

Responsibilities

• Set technical strategy for your team on a year‑long time scale and tie it to critical projects.
• Collaborate across product, design and analytics to ensure technical sustainability and manage risks.
• Act as a force‑multiplier by defining and advocating technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own your team’s operations and on‑call readiness with monitoring, triage, playbooks and testing.
• Set code review and design standards and champion them beyond your team through writing and talks.
• Mentor and develop talent by providing feedback and leading by example.
