Job summary

Airbnb is seeking a Staff Engineer to own platform areas end to end, guiding the developer lifecycle from AI-assisted development to build, test, and code review. You will drive a roadmap across teams and mentor engineers to improve productivity.

The role focuses on agentic development, large-scale JVM monorepos, and modernization through automated refactoring. You will work with engineering leaders across Airbnb to drive adoption of new capabilities, influence technical direction, and help

Qualifications

• 9+ years of industry experience with a degree or 6+ with PhD
• Bachelor's or Master's in CS or related field preferred
• Proficiency in one or more back-end server languages (Java/Kotlin/Ruby/Go/C++/et cetera)
• Experience with high-scale distributed APIs, data pipelines, and efficient algorithms
• Ability to influence stakeholders and drive cross-team alignment
• Experience collaborating in cross-functional teams with design, product and data science partners

Responsibilities

• Own platform or infrastructure areas end to end and drive technical agenda
• Advance AI-assisted development platform with agent skills and tool integrations
• Scale build/merge infrastructure for large JVM monorepos (Bazel, remote execution)
• Raise coverage, mutation signals, and AI-authored tests
• Lead large-scale codebase modernization and automated refactoring
• Turn telemetry into decisions to improve developer experience and velocity
• Mentor engineers and shape engineering practices in the team
• Represent work externally via blogs, talks, open source, and partnerships
