Job summary

Gusto is building a PEO Growth product and seeks a Staff Engineer to own the onboarding path from discovery to setup. You will shape the end-to-end journey, collaborate across teams, and ensure accuracy in a regulated domain.

You should have 8+ years of software engineering, deep full-stack experience (Rails and React/TypeScript), and a track record with AI tooling. This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco or New York with competitive pay and equity.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Full-stack capability in server-side and frontend; Ruby on Rails and React/TypeScript preferred.
• AI fluency and practical use of AI tools.

Responsibilities

• Own the PEO Onboarding experience end to end.
• Set technical direction and durable abstractions for growth.
• Build in a regulated domain requiring high quality and accuracy.
• Partner across app teams to create a cohesive journey.
• Use AI as part of daily work and embed AI-assisted guidance.
• Instrument the funnel: measure onboarding success with experiments.
• Raise engineering bar with reviews, testing, and observability.
