Job summary

Gusto is seeking a seasoned Staff Software Engineer to join the PEO Benefits team in a role that spans the full product lifecycle from design to launch. You’ll contribute to a large-scale Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React application, shape architecture, and own features while mentoring fellow engineers.

You’ll collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to translate customer pain points into robust solutions, leveraging AI to accelerate delivery and improve testing.

Qualifications

• Eight years or more of software development experience.
• Three+ years of PEO experience preferred, with PEO flows in a high-growth environment.
• Experience owning multi-quarter projects solving complex engineering problems and delivering measurable customer impact at scale.
• Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity and aligning multiple stakeholders.
• Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities.
• Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks and sharing best practices to scale AI safely across teams.
• Ability to mentor engineers to maximize performance and impact.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and test the PEO Benefits experience including flows, integrations, and tooling.
• Mentor other engineers to tackle complex problems at scale.
• Scale a large Ruby/Rails and JavaScript/React application.
• Collaborate with Product, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to understand customer pain points, prototype, iterate, and launch daily.
• Build products our customers genuinely love.
