Job summary

Gusto is building a PEO Growth team to simplify how small businesses adopt a co-employer solution. As a Staff Engineer, you will own the end-to-end onboarding journey from discovery to full setup, shaping the experience across teams and domains with a bias toward reliable, scalable software.

You will apply AI tools to everyday engineering work, collaborate across product and design, and raise the bar on quality, testing, and observability while influencing the product at scale.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with customer-facing surfaces in a large production codebase.
• Strong full-stack range: server-side and modern frontend; Rails and React/TypeScript are desirable.
• Demonstrated AI fluency: you use AI tooling in daily engineering work and keep up with tooling changes.
• High ownership in ambiguity: shape fuzzy needs into buildable solutions and ship.

Responsibilities

• Own the PEO Onboarding experience end to end — learning about the PEO, committing to it, and getting set up.
• Set technical direction: turn bets into designs, sequencing, and durable abstractions.
• Build in a regulated domain where quality and accuracy are critical.
• Partner across app teams to integrate domains into a coherent journey.
• Use AI as a normal part of your work — coding agents, review, debugging, and onboarding guidance.
• Define onboarding success metrics and use experiments to guide changes.
• Raise the engineering bar with reviews, tests, observability, and careful judgment.
