Job summary

Gusto in San Francisco is seeking a Staff Product Engineer on Growth Onboarding to own the onboarding experience from signup to activation. You will build and ship 0-to-1 AI-powered experiences, collaborating with product, design, and data to turn ideas into concrete, measurable improvements that reduce friction for new customers.

You will participate in a fast-moving, outcomes-oriented team culture, with hybrid office expectations and a strong focus on building scalable onboarding experiences

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience.
• Product-minded engineer who starts from the customer problem and metric that matters.
• Proven ability to ship, measure, and iterate with high quality.
• Experience applying AI/LLM capabilities to real product problems.
• Founder mindset with ownership and comfort with ambiguity.
• Strong technical leadership and mentoring of engineers.
• Strong full-stack fundamentals across front end, back end, and data.

Responsibilities

• Own meaningful slices of the signup-to-activation experience end to end — from data model to UI.
• Invent and prototype net-new, 0-to-1 experiences using AI to reimagine onboarding.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Data to frame problems and validate with customers.
• Identify where AI removes customer effort and where a simple form suffices.
• Design onboarding as modular building blocks to add new entry points quickly.
• Raise the engineering bar with high-quality code and strong reviews.
• Make sharp scoping calls and ship the simplest version to test ideas.
