Job summary

Anthropic in San Francisco seeks a Staff Backend Engineer to own backend systems powering Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude.ai. You will scale multi-cloud infrastructure and translate frontier AI research into reliable, consumer- and enterprise-ready products.

You will lead system architecture, mentor engineers, and drive reliable REST/gRPC services, with collaboration across Platform, Auth & Identity, and Platform Safety pillars. A strong background in distributed systems is essential.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend or staff-level engineering experience.
• Experience shipping large-scale microservices powering B2B or consumer products.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems and cloud-native architectures.
• Proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or Rust.

Responsibilities

• System Architecture & Leadership: lead design and architectural decisions for high-scale backend systems.
• Cross-Functional Alignment: collaborate with product, design, and research teams to ship features.
• Hands-On Engineering: implement scalable REST/gRPC APIs and extend cloud infrastructure.
• Operational Excellence: establish observability and fault-tolerant platform services.
• Technical Mentorship: mentor engineers and raise engineering standards.
