Job summary

ShiftKey is a healthcare workforce marketplace operating in a regulated environment. The Staff AI Engineer will own ShiftKey’s AI infrastructure layer, including the organizational knowledge platform, the hosting and operation of AI agents in the cloud, and the retrieval layer powering both internal engineering tools and customer-facing capabilities.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with production AI/LLM systems.
• Experience with retrieval engineering including hybrid search, re-ranking, and context management.
• Hands-on Terraform and cloud infrastructure provisioning experience.
• HIPAA-style data-handling knowledge in regulated SaaS environments.
• Production-grade fluency in Go, Python, or TypeScript.

Responsibilities

• Evolve the AI knowledge platform across retrieval, indexing and synthesis for org-wide use.
• Architect and operate multi-step, tool-using AI systems with cost guardrails and observability.
• Design graph-based, relationship-aware retrieval across data sources for multi-hop queries.
• Define AI platform API surface with product engineering and translate primitives into developer-ready abstractions.
• Build reference agent implementations for incident triage, support, and future use cases grounded in institutional knowledge.
• Own the AI infrastructure cost model and monitor spend with guardrails.
