POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Staff Accountant reports to the Accounting Manager and is responsible for a variety of accounting activities including account analysis and month-end close of both Vertex Education and Vertex's client, Legacy Traditional Schools. The Staff Accountant will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and be detail-oriented.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Note: The essential functions below describe the general requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Incumbents may perform all or most of the primary accountabilities listed below. Specific tasks, responsibilities or competencies may be documented in the incumbent’s performance objectives as outlined by the incumbent’s immediate supervisor or manager.

  • Review of daily cash reconciliations and assistance with cash-flow monitoring, including any necessary transfers (wire, ACH, etc.).
  • Daily, weekly, monthly journal entries, program allocations etc.
  • Assist with semi-monthly bond project fund request and reconciliations.
  • Responsible for month-end close (as assigned), including preparation and review of journal entries, account reconciliations and account analysis in a timely manner. Included but not limited to:
  • Accrued payroll reconciliations.
  • Accrued liabilities reconciliations
  • Prepaid tracking.
  • Federal and state grant revenue tracking.
  • Bond fees payable and related expenses.
  • Payroll Entries.
  • Note payable and receivable tracking.
  • Assist with the analysis of purchases for capitalization and entry into fixed asset software.
  • Assist with merchant account management.
  • Identify and purpose solutions for automation and process improvements while ensuring daily responsibilities are completed with detail, accuracy and timeliness.
  • Update and maintain policies and procedures documentation.
  • Preform other job-related duties as directed by supervisor.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Will assist in review of work performed by the Accounting Specialists.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Education, Licensure, or Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Work Experience or Related Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in accounting, both transactional and analysis level.
  • Experience in a multi-company environment.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong Excel skills.
  • Experience with large ERP system, i.e. Workday, Oracle, SAP.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team-oriented focus, and ability to deal with a wide variety of personalities and learning styles.
  • Strong Communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Strong problem solving skills and decisiveness.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Drive for continuous process improvements.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

  • The incumbent in this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a valid IVP Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card at all times.

PHYSICAL AND TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Travel between campuses is required from time to time.
  • This position requires the need to lift objects (up to 25 pounds) on occasion.
  • This position may require sitting for long periods at times, talking on the phone, standing, kneeling, stooping and long periods of concentration.
  • Local and in-state travel required.
