Job summary

Chicago Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Classroom Assistant to support students with disabilities under the direction of a Special Education teacher. You will reinforce learning concepts, provide one-to-one tutoring, and assist with daily living skills in a classroom setting at Mahalia Jackson School.

The role involves hygiene support and mobility assistance as needed. The position requires a paraprofessional license, college credits, and familiarity with IEPs.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of characteristics of students with various disabilities; English grammar and spelling; basic mathematics.
• Ability to work with students with disabilities ages birth to 21; follow instructions; complete written reports.
• CPR training is highly desirable; if not trained, must complete CPR training as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

• Assist in instruction of students with disabilities in elementary and high schools.
• Provide one-on-one tutoring to reinforce learning concepts.
• Assist with personal hygiene for students with severe disabilities.
• Assist with daily living skills and use of equipment in classrooms.
• Accompany students to swimming pools and medical clinics as needed.
• Take notes in classrooms for students who cannot do so themselves.
• Maintain written behavior records and assist in field trips.
