Qualifications

• High School diploma required; Medical Terminology preferred.
• 1-3 years experience in a healthcare environment preferred; experience with internal/external customers in a fast-paced setting is desired.
• Familiarity with general laboratory procedures (e.g., centrifugation, specimen handling) is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Registers all specimens received from Outreach patients, obtaining missing information by contacting physician offices or facilities.
• Accurately requests laboratory tests in the computer using correct coding and generates a label with patient and specimen information.
• Properly identifies, labels and processes specimens, creating specimen batches as needed.
• Prioritizes specimens during peak workloads to ensure timely processing.
• Monitors specimen tracking board and shipping batches; follows up on missing or overdue outreach specimens.
• Adheres to safety procedures for equipment and handling hazardous materials.
• Answers all calls with proper telephone etiquette and initiates actions to resolve inquiries; maintains knowledge of department services, testing, and requirements.
• Monitors failed fax/scheduled report printer and addresses issues; coordinates with IT staff as needed.
• Disseminates patient results as requested by customers.
• Receives physician orders for lab services via telephone/fax, completes requisition forms and distributes forms for anticipated visits.
• Creates/maintains manifests and home draw work orders for efficient collection of home-bound patients.
• Responds to requests for additional and/or stat services and delegates to outreach phlebotomists.
• Dispatches and prioritizes courier services and client supply requests promptly.
• Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and development as outlined in performance reviews.
• Performs other duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation of the department/section.
