Job summary

Wake County Public School System seeks an Instructional Assistant-Special Education to support teachers in implementing IEPs and to foster a safe, inclusive classroom environment. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with additional coursework or experience in early childhood settings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Six documented semester hours of coursework in early childhood education, OR two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
• Maintain CPI certification; CPI training provided by WCPSS.

Responsibilities

• Provides support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students; ensures an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment.
• Assists teachers with strategies related to the implementation of students’ behavioral intervention plans.
• Aids teachers with planning and organizing, evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing necessary materials.
• Demonstrates professional and technical skills to support student achievement and the school program.
• Maintains a positive disposition and calm demeanor with students at all times.
• Provides in-class support promoting independence and self-determination.
• Assists with assistive technology and AAC devices to meet needs.
• Maintains confidentiality and proper documentation; participates in professional development.
• Coordinates and facilitates student transitions between classes; assists with health care needs as required.
• Assists with CPI-related duties and behavior support as needed.
