Job summary

Montgomery-Public-Schools seeks a dedicated Special Education Paraeducator to assist the SPED services teacher in delivering instructional and support services aimed at maximizing student achievement.

Responsibilities include helping with small group instruction, preparing instructional materials, assisting with mobility, feeding, and hygiene needs, and supporting classroom safety. The role is nine months with non-exempt status.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or 48 semester hours or ACT Work Keys required.
  • Must meet the suitability criteria under Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment.
  • Proven oral and written communication with students, parents and others.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills across diverse groups.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Physical strength and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to accept constructive feedback.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work on special education buses as needed.
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain regular attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals.
  • Presents lessons or portions of lessons to students and checks work.
  • Helps students use books, computers, and classroom materials.
  • Maintains routine records related to attendance, grades, and behavior.
  • Transfers students in and out of holding or locomotive devices and on/off buses.
  • Assists with toileting and basic hygiene needs for students.
  • Aids in moving students with special needs as required.
  • Gains and serves food to students and assists with feeding.
  • Maintains discipline and encourages appropriate student behavior.
  • Manages student behavior and assists with crisis intervention when needed.
  • Facilitates use of mobility equipment for students.
  • Assists on field trips with physical needs and discipline.
  • Supports bus drivers with discipline and student care.
  • Provides adult assistance on buses as assigned.
  • Directs activities and acts as play leader for groups of students.
  • Performs basic health or nursing tasks as directed by a nurse.
  • Supervises students in the absence of the teacher.
  • Implements behavior management plans as instructed.
  • Attends IEP meetings if requested.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Demonstrates initiative for problem solving and improvements.
  • Collaborates with supervisor and staff to meet district goals.
  • Engages in professional growth and ethics.
