Job summary

Montgomery-Public-Schools is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator to support the special education services teacher in delivering instructional and support services aimed at maximizing student achievement.

You will help maintain a safe and healthy learning environment, assist with small group instruction, and prepare instructional materials while communicating effectively with students, families, and staff.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or 48 semester hours or ACT Work Keys pass.
• Meet suitability criteria for Alabama Child Protection Act and related requirements.
• Proven success in relevant work experience.
• Ability to work in a demanding, stressful environment.
• Proficient oral and written communication with students, parents and others.
• Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with diverse groups.
• Identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Physical strength and mobility to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and prepare reports.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates support for the school system's vision and priorities.
• Presents lessons or parts of lessons to students, checks work, and assigns additional tasks as directed.
• Assists students with books, computers, and classroom materials.
• Keeps routine records related to attendance, grades, and behavior as assigned.
• Transfers students on and off buses or in holding devices.
• Assists with toileting and mobility needs of students with special needs.
• Assists with movement and positioning of students requiring support.
• Serves meals and assists with feeding when needed.
• Maintains discipline and encourages positive student behavior.
• Supports crisis intervention and maintains safety according to training guidelines.
• Facilitates use of mobility equipment and assists on field trips.
• Assists bus drivers with discipline and student needs on transportation.
• Provides adult assistance on buses as assigned by school leadership.
• Acts as play leader for assigned groups and supports instructional activities.
• Performs basic health or nursing tasks as directed by a nurse.
• Supervises students in the teacher's absence.
• Implements behavior management plans per teacher instructions.
• Attends IEP meetings if requested.
• Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct.
• Demonstrates initiative for problem-solving and improvements.
• Collaborates with staff to share data and meet deadlines.
• Engages in professional growth and ethical leadership.
• Reports issues to administration promptly.
• Responds to inquiries and feedback timely and positively.
• Maintains and submits reports and correspondence accurately.
