Montgomery Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Paraeducator to assist the classroom teacher in delivering instructional support and to help create a safe, productive learning environment.

The role involves assisting with small group instruction, materials preparation, and student supervision on buses and during activities, with a nine-month term and regular collaboration with the school team.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited college or a passing score on the ACT Work Keys Assessment.
  • Suitable under Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a highly demanding, stressful environment.
  • Proficient oral and written communication with students, parents and others.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity and mobility for job tasks.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and submit reports.
  • Willingness to accept constructive feedback.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with toileting and hygiene needs.
  • Ability to transfer, feed, and provide physical intervention as required.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexible hours for special education bus support.
  • Punctuality and regular attendance.
  • Board may require alternatives to listed qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals.
  • Presents lessons or portions of lessons and checks students' work.
  • Helps students use books, computers, and classroom materials.
  • Assists teacher with attendance, grades, and behavior records.
  • Transfers students on and off buses and related equipment.
  • Assists with toileting, hygiene, and mobility needs.
  • Provides physical intervention when required within training.
  • Maintains discipline and encourages appropriate behavior.
  • Supports crisis intervention and safety procedures as trained.
  • Assists with field trips and bus discipline.
  • Provides adult assistance on special education buses as needed.
  • Acts as play leader and guides activities for groups.
  • Performs health, first aid, or basic nursing tasks as directed by staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence timely and accurately.
  • Collaborates with staff to achieve school goals.
  • Participates in IEP meetings if requested.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures and follows regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
