Job summary

Greater Albany Public Schools is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter at Calapooia Middle School to provide accessible education for deaf and hard of hearing students. Work includes classroom interpretation and support during school activities, following the 181-day, 9-month secondary calendar.

Minimum qualifications include 72 college credits or an associate degree or higher, or passing the Highly Qualified exam. The role reports to the building principal and is a full-time position.

• Demonstrated ability to interpret between spoken language and sign language in classroom settings.

Responsibilities

• Perform simultaneous interpretation of spoken language and sign language for deaf and hard of hearing students (K-21) in classrooms and school events.
• Provide re-teaching, tutoring and academic support as directed by teachers.
• VOICE the signed language into English as needed and assist with classroom activities.

Position Overview

The Educational Interpreter works in a team setting and is responsible for the deaf and hard of hearing students' (Kindergarten through age 21) accessibility to education. Perform simultaneous interpretation of spoken language and sign language for deaf and hard of hearing students (spoken English into sign language and voicing sign language into English) within the classroom and during school-related functions/activities. Provide re-teaching/tutoring and other academic and classroom support as directed. Provide academic assistance under the direction of the teacher of the deaf and/or the classroom teacher."
