Job summary

The GEO Group, Inc. is seeking a shift commander to direct security operations on a night shift and supervise staff in a high‑security facility.

You will ensure detainee safety, enforce policies, and maintain records and daily logs while coordinating with the Chief of Security and other leadership. Ideal candidates have supervisory experience in corrections, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a strong grasp of relevant laws and procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 19 years of age.
• Must meet same basic qualifications as a Detention Officer.
• Minimum high school graduate or equivalent; related college courses highly desirable.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting, one of which was in a supervisory capacity.
• Must be emotionally stable, understanding and attuned to facility objectives; flexible, cooperative and empathetic to inmates.
• Working knowledge of laws relating to corrections and applicable court orders.
• Ability to communicate and interact with a variety of personalities.
• Ability to interpret complex written and oral communications, documents and instructions.
• Ability to give instructions and have them carried out.
• Ability to coordinate staffing requirements for security supervisors and officers.

Responsibilities

• Directs security activities and supervises custodial staff.
• Directs all security operations on one shift and ensures maximum facility coordination, detainee supervision and safety.
• Assists in development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security and/or treatment of detainees.
• Conducts inspection tours to ensure compliance with security, safety, sanitation, contraband, and other facility regulations.
• Reviews disciplinary matters concerning staff and detainees and evaluates staff effectiveness.
• Responds to major unusual occurrences and ensures staff training in emergency procedures.
• Oversees assignment of duties, post orders and ensures procedures are followed.
• Promotes a constructive environment that supports program participation and inmate welfare.
• Prepares records and reports as assigned and monitors daily logs.
