Job summary

St. Vincent de Paul is seeking a Program Assistant to provide 24-hour awake coverage and oversee day-to-day shelter operations. The role supports shelter guests with welfare, safety, and comfort, delivering crisis intervention for callers seeking shelter or referrals.

You will work with clients, case managers, and staff to ensure needs are met with dignity, helping guests move toward stability and self-sufficiency by coordinating activities, transportation, meals, and resource navigation.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to read, write, and speak English.
• Ability to relate with others in a respectful manner and work well as a team.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries with program participants and refer them to case management staff.
• Sensitivity to the needs of homeless individuals and ability to work with diverse backgrounds.
• Organizational skills to manage daily tasks and records.
• Knowledge of floor and building maintenance; basic handyperson skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide 24-hour awake coverage and manage day-to-day shelter operations.
• Assign volunteer tasks and support guests in completing them.
• Ensure safety and security of guests, staff, and visitors on shift.
• Respond to emergencies following established protocols.
• Supervise children with parental guidance and support organized activities.
• Assist residents with daily living activities, meals, resources, and transportation coordination.
• Maintain accurate attendance records and sign-in procedures.
• Mediating conflicts to maintain a peaceful environment.
