Job summary

Boston Public Health Commission seeks a shelter staff member to maintain safety and order in its homeless services facilities in Boston. You will support guests with meals, clothing, and essential services, while enforcing rules and coordinating with the team.

The role requires an Associate of Science or a high school diploma with experience, strong communication skills, and a willingness to work with diverse populations. Spanish language skills and a valid MA driver’s license are preferred.

Qualifications

• Associate of Science Degree or High School Diploma / GED and 1 year of related experience.
• Experience with addicted and mentally ill populations preferred.
• Experience working with diverse ethnic, racial, and low-income populations.
• Able to follow directions and work harmoniously with staff and guests.
• Computer literacy preferred. Strong written and verbal skills.
• Bi-Lingual/Spanish speaking preferred.
• Valid MA driver's license and good driving record required.

Responsibilities

• Ensures overall safety of guests and shelter environment. Performs rounds and searches for contraband on arrival.
• Intervenes to de-escalate conflict and prevent crises.
• Develops positive relationships with guests to facilitate care.
• Maintains rules and individual service plans to keep a stable environment.
• Monitors meals, coordinates supplies, and supervises cleanup; distributes linen and clothing.
• Attends required meetings and trainings; provides phone coverage as needed.
• Performs administrative tasks including records, logs, and data entry.
• Performs other duties as required.
