Job summary

The Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) Homeless Services Bureau seeks a Counselor/Guest Support Specialist to warmly welcome guests, support shelter operations, and coordinate with internal programs. The role emphasizes trauma-informed care and Housing First principles to promote stability and safety for guests.

Responsibilities include maintaining records in HMIS, assisting with daily living tasks, conducting assessments, and facilitating referrals to health and support services.

Qualifications

• Associate of Science Degree or High School Diploma with 1 year related experience.
• Punctual, professional, and respectful toward guests and staff.
• MA driver’s license with good driving record; must obtain MA license within 6 months.

Responsibilities

• Welcome guests and enforce shelter rules; check guests into the system.
• Provide safe, low-threshold shelter environments and ensure policy compliance.
• Conduct safety rounds and screening of guests entering shelter.
• Develop positive relationships to facilitate care for guests/clients.
• Provide milieu support and assist in housing areas.
• Respond to emergencies per HSB policies and de-escalate when needed.
• Make referrals to internal/external programs; coordinate with service teams.
• Maintain records in ETO or HMIS; ensure confidentiality and ethics.
