Job summary

Boston Public Health Commission is hiring Counselors/Guest Support Specialists for the Homeless Services Bureau in Boston. You will welcome guests, maintain a safe shelter environment, and coordinate services while following trauma-informed care and housing-first frameworks.

The role requires a degree or equivalent experience, strong communication, and a commitment to health equity. Bilingual abilities and a MA driver’s license are pluses.

Qualifications

  • Associate of Science Degree or High School Diploma / GED with 1 year related experience.
  • Punctuality, professionalism and respect for guests and staff required.
  • Ability to follow directions and work collaboratively with staff and guests.
  • Strong written and verbal skills required.
  • Promote health equity, inclusion, and diversity within BPHC and community.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome guests, check-in, and review shelter rules.
  • Provide a safe environment and ensure shelter rule compliance.
  • Perform safety rounds and screening for guests entering shelter.
  • Develop professional relationships with guests and clients.
  • Provide milieu support and assist with daily living tasks as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and crises per policy.
  • De-escalate conflicts and intervene to prevent crises.
  • Assess needs and refer to internal/external programs.
  • Link guests to service teams and health clinics.
  • Coordinate group meetings, life skills, and day programs.
  • Assist with resources distribution (linens, food, clothing, toiletries).
  • Provide access to safety, health, and harm-reduction supplies.

Skills
