Job summary

A northern New Jersey consulting engineering firm is seeking a senior Water Resources Design Engineer to anchor the technical bench and stay hands-on with design work. You will lead the design of water and wastewater facilities, coordinate with project managers, and mentor junior staff to uphold high technical standards.

The role requires 5–10 years of relevant experience, a PE license (or near), and strong knowledge of NJDEP regulations, EPA, CWA, and SDWA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or closely related field.
• 5-10 years of hands-on water and wastewater design experience.
• PE license or close to obtaining within 6–12 months.
• Strong working knowledge of NJDEP regulations and permitting, plus EPA, CWA, SDWA.
• AutoCAD and technical writing to produce standalone reports and specifications.
• Prefers staying technical; not aiming for project management immediately.
• Nice to have: experience with funding applications and State Revolving Fund processes.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineering of water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, storage facilities, and distribution/collection systems.
• Conduct feasibility and planning studies, including hydraulic, process, and environmental evaluations under EPA and NJDEP guidelines.
• Prepare engineering calculations, reports, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents.
• Lead and support regulatory permitting activities (NJPDES permits, TWAs, Bureau of Water System Engineering).
• Perform site investigations and field inspections to support design and construction.
• Collaborate with structural, civil, and MEP teams, vendors, and subcontractors on integrated packages.
• Mentor junior staff on technical work, regulatory knowledge, and design procedures.
