Job summary

RK&K is seeking a Senior Project Engineer to join the highway design team in the Roanoke/Blacksburg, VA area. You will plan, design, and lead transportation projects for VDOT and other clients, mentoring junior engineers and delivering high-quality design documents.

The ideal candidate has a PE license, 6+ years of highway design, and proficiency with MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads Designer, and Civil 3D. Strong knowledge of MUTCD, VDOT, and AASHTO standards is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field from an accredited institution.
• Current Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in civil engineering.
• Six years of highway and roadway design experience with a focus on DOT or municipal projects.
• Proficiency in MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads Designer, Civil 3D, and other design software.
• Strong understanding of MUTCD, VDOT, and AASHTO highway design standards.
• Proven experience leading tasks on complex transportation projects and collaborating in a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Leadership and mentoring abilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, analysis, and development of highway projects ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
• Review and certify engineering plans and documents for quality.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative, cost-effective solutions.
• Prepare technical reports, feasibility studies, and design calculations.
• Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders for approvals.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers.
• Perform quality control reviews of design documents.
• Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in highway design.
