Job summary

BKF Engineers is seeking a Senior Project Engineer with civil transportation design expertise to join our San Jose team. Hybrid or remote work from our Redwood City or Pleasanton offices may be available for the right candidate.

The role targets a California-licensed P.E. with 5+ years of experience who excels in leading technical delivery, mentoring junior staff, and delivering roadway, highway, and multimodal projects from planning through construction support.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of transportation infrastructure design and project delivery.
• B.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• EIT certification required; PE licensure preferred.
• Strong roadway design background including staged construction and controls.
• Familiarity with Caltrans standards, permitting, and public agency coordination.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD/Civil 3D and project management tools.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, both verbal and written.
• Occasional travel between BKF offices and client sites.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical design and delivery of transportation projects including roadways and corridors.
• Organize workflows, establish design criteria, and delegate tasks to junior staff.
• Decide on project elements and consult with senior leadership on complex issues.
• Prepare reports, feasibility studies, and environmental documentation.
• Develop and review grading, drainage, and stormwater management plans.
• Create and review construction specifications and quantity takeoffs.
• Support QA/QC and identify out-of-scope services.
• Mentor engineers and coordinate sub-consultants for cohesive execution.
• Attend meetings with clients and stakeholders; track action items.
• Assist with scheduling, permitting, and construction as needed.
• Contribute to proposals and cross-sell BKF's services regionally.
• Manage assigned elements within budgets and timelines.
