Job summary

Mercury Insurance is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to independently design, implement, administer, and support critical, high-transaction systems with direct customer, revenue, or compliance impact. This role mentors others and contributes to security, reliability, and automation initiatives across on-premises and cloud environments.

Ideal candidates have 5–7 years of systems engineering experience, strong Linux fundamentals, and hands-on Proxmox, AWS/GCP/Azure, GitHub, and IaC/Jenkins

Qualifications

  • BS Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 5 to 7 years of prior working experience in systems engineering or related in a medium or large organization.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux fundamentals, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux, along with container platforms and Kubernetes distributions.
  • Advanced Bash and shell scripting skills for systems administration, automation, monitoring, and operational tooling in Linux environments.
  • Experience with enterprise networking concepts and technologies, including proxies, virtual IPs, bastion hosts, and related connectivity and traffic-management patterns.
  • Hands-on experience administering Proxmox and at least one major cloud platform, such as AWS, GCP, or Microsoft Azure.
  • Strong experience with GitHub, including repository administration, branching strategies, pull requests, code reviews, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience implementing GitOps practices to manage infrastructure and application deployments through version-controlled, auditable, and automated processes.
  • Extensive experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and configuration-management tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or comparable platforms.
  • Ability to design and maintain automated deployment pipelines that promote consistency, compliance, and operational efficiency across development, test, and production environments.
  • Experience with DevOps and automation toolsets such as Jenkins and PowerShell, in addition to Linux-based scripting and automation.
  • Deep understanding of infrastructure security, including authentication and authorization, file and directory permissions, IAM roles, SSH keys, certificates, key-management services (KMS), and security or compliance frameworks such as CIS, SOX, and PCI.
  • Experience supporting enterprise application and middleware technologies, including Apache, Tomcat, messaging platforms, Spring Boot applications, and related production services.
  • Ability to partner effectively with engineering, security, and operations teams to improve platform reliability, compliance, and deployment velocity through automation-first practices.

Responsibilities

  • Implements infrastructure systems and components in support of business and IT applications such as hardware, servers, software (such as operating systems, packaged software, configuration files, security certificates, database system etc.), and appliances. Independently conducts implementations that include installation, configuration, update, documentation and knowledge transfer.
  • Analyzes, diagnoses, isolates and identifies system problems. Create short term solution to alleviate problem symptoms. Identify root causes and create and/or execute long term remediation plans. Contribute to compliance related activities such as reporting, baseline and verifications.
  • Participates in application development process by reviewing non-functional requirements and propose, design, and deliver supporting infrastructure.
  • Occasionally manage small scale IT projects or exercise technical leadership to oversee the architecture design and validation where relevant systems delivery is involved.
  • Shares knowledge and mentor less experienced staff
  • Initiates, promotes, and exemplifies best practices in areas of capacity, asset/inventory, configuration, update, procurement, and vendor engagement.
  • Develop, design, test, and document improvement solutions and processes (such as scripting, automation, and workflow) aimed to improve system’s efficiency, reliability, scalability, and cost effectiveness.

  • Regular attendance on a full-time schedule of at least 8 hours and 40 hours per week
