Job summary

Liberty Mutual Surety is seeking a Senior Surety Underwriter to join our Small to Mid Commercial team in Maryland. You will underwrite and negotiate profitable surety accounts, service independent agents, brokers, and small to mid commercial accounts within an assigned territory.

You will analyze financial statements and credit risk to support confident decisions. You will stay current on product lines, mentor junior staff, and contribute to portfolio growth while maintaining rigorous risk

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or equivalent; 2.5+ years surety underwriting experience preferred.
Strong understanding of financial and accounting principles; sound business judgment on credit history.
Proven analytical ability to evaluate surety underwriting risks.
AFSB certification preferred.
Excellent written and spoken communication; strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

Underwrite and negotiate accounts to maximize profitability while minimizing risk.
Manage profitability and retention of an assigned book of business; develop portfolio with agents.
Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements (static and trend).
Stay current on product lines and promote opportunities with agents/brokers.
Investigate, analyze, and manage underwriting/accounting/workflow issues.
Mentor more junior staff where applicable.
Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
