Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Phoenix seeks a Lead Substation Engineer to apply extensive knowledge of protective relaying and controls for HV and EHV substations, leading design efforts and client reviews.

You will mentor engineers, develop relay philosophies, prepare I/O assignments and schematics, perform and review calculations, coordinate with project teams and vendors, and travel to sites as needed within a three‑day‑in‑office hybrid schedule.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science Engineering degree required.
• 12+ years experience designing substations 138kV+.
• PE license.
• Experience as firm/client liaison in a lead role.
• Experience writing relay calculations support docs.
• Experience with design techniques for plans, drawings, models.
• Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS or vendor software.
• Familiarity with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
• Experience with protective relay equipment (SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler).
• Proficiency with MS Office; strong written/verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead protection and controls engineering design efforts.
• Prepare relay philosophies and schematics; oversee I/O assignments.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers and designers.
• Coordinate with project teams, clients, and vendors.
• Perform analyses, reviews, and independent verifications of work.
