Job summary

Jacobs is expanding its Transmission & Distribution group and seeks a Principal Substation Engineer to design high voltage substations for utilities and developers. You will interface with clients, translate requirements into deliverables, and deliver project-ready designs with strong QA/QC.

The role includes mentoring staff and supporting sales activities. You will contribute to designing AIS/GIS substations, groundings, and protection schemes, while leveraging Autodesk/Bentley CAD tools across

Qualifications

5 years of direct Substation design experience with utility or consulting organization.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of High Voltage substation components including GIS, transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, capacitor banks, station service transformers, reactors, rigid bus, GIS, switchgear buildings, control houses, underground cable potheads.
Experience developing substation designs from conceptual through IFC drawings including general arrangement, conduit and trench plans, grounding, BOMs, conduit schedules, and construction details.
Familiarity with grounding system design and lightning protection for substations.
Ability to perform AC/DC station service calculations and voltage drop studies.
Experience developing and reviewing vendor specifications for control houses/switchgear buildings and commissioning specs.
Demonstrated QA/QC of design calculations, drawings, and specifications.
Familiarity with CAD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley.
Owner's representative experience is preferred.
Ability to scope projects, prepare task orders, review designs, and conduct field visits.

Responsibilities

Interface with utility/developer clients and translate their requirements into substation design deliverables.
Develop substation designs from concept through IFC drawings and related documentation.
Mentor and develop junior staff and support the group’s training efforts.
Support sales and proposal activities with technical input and quality deliverables.
Provide engineering oversight and act as Owner's consultant/Owner's Engineer when required.
