Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in the US-CA region seeks a Senior Structural Engineer to lead design teams on diverse projects, guiding work from concept through construction while adapting plans to budget and client needs.

The role demands expert code knowledge (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7), strong communication and mentoring skills, and the ability to deliver QA/QC, schedules and proposals while fostering client relationships.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program with 7 years experience.
• Or, bachelor's degree in Structural or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of FE exam and 7 years experience.
• Or, master's degree in Structural Engineering and 6 years structural engineering experience.
• Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures. Strong knowledge of structural design codes (IBC, AISC, ACI, ASCE7).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
• Ability to travel.
• Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural design from conceptual phase through design completion for project needs and requirements.
• Prepare structural equipment specifications and data sheets, RFQs, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
• Review structural vendor drawings; data interface with suppliers, clients and other disciplines.
• Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning; manage change orders.
• Apply expert knowledge of structural concepts, codes and procedures.
• Apply knowledge to complex projects and find non-standard design solutions.
• Quality review production drawings and project data across CAD software.
• Coordinate construction administration with field personnel; resolve installation issues, inspections and testing.
• Lead field inspections, installations, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build relationships with clients and contractors; develop new business opportunities.
• Participate in sales and marketing efforts and identify key pursuits.
• Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements; present budgets and cost estimates.
• Provide leadership and mentoring to junior engineers; ensure QA/QC and safety policy compliance.
