Altana is seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the AI behind Altana Nexus, a platform for global trade. You will build real-time decisioning systems on risk, compliance and enforcement, handling shipments, declarations, and trade documents at scale.

You will mentor engineers, shape architecture across teams, and collaborate with customers and product managers to convert ambiguous problems into shipped capabilities, while advancing state-of-the-art ML techniques in production.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years building and shipping ML systems in production, with product-oriented ML delivery including recent LLM-powered work.
• Deep expertise in PyTorch and modern Python ML stack (Hugging Face, scikit-learn, NumPy, Pandas/Polars).
• Hands-on experience building production LLM applications: RAG, tool/function calling, structured outputs, agentic workflows.
• Shipped agentic systems in production and knowledge of failure modes: tool use, planning, state, recovery, human-in-the-loop.
• Experience post-training or adapting LLMs (SFT, DPO, RLHF/RLAIF) for production use cases.
• Rigorous evaluation: eval suites, golden datasets, LLM-as-judge pipelines.
• Judgment on frontier model APIs vs fine-tuned/open-weight models vs classical ML models, cost/latency/accuracy balance.
• Senior Staff-level technical leadership: setting architecture direction, mentoring engineers, turning problems into roadmaps.
• Passion for applying SOTA techniques to real-world problems with hands-on data/work, commitment to engineering excellence.

Responsabilités

• Define architecture and roadmap for models and agentic systems processing trade data in real time.
• Lead design of reliable, cost-efficient ingestion, document understanding, entity resolution, inference and routing pipelines.
• Fine-tune/post-train models using feedback and agent traces to beat prompts.
• Build evals, tracing and feedback loops to detect regressions in production.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical bar across Engineering.
• Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, product managers and customers to turn ambiguous problems into shipped capabilities.
