Job summary

Altana is seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the AI behind Altana Nexus, building agentic systems for global trade. You will shape architecture, data pipelines, and production models running in real time to deliver risk, classification and compliance decisions for governments and large enterprises.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent experience
• 10+ years building and shipping ML systems in production
• Deep expertise in PyTorch and the modern Python ML stack
• Hands-on experience building production LLM applications: RAG, tool calling, structured outputs, agentic workflows
• Shipped agentic systems in production and know failure modes
• Experience post-training or adapting LLMs for production use
• Rigorous evaluation: eval suites, golden datasets, LLM-as-judge
• Judgment on frontier vs fine-tuned vs classical models balancing cost, latency, accuracy
• Senior staff-level technical leadership across teams
• Passion for applying SOTA techniques to real-world problems
• Strong communication skills
• Heavy user of AI coding tools in daily workflow

Responsibilities

• Define architecture and roadmap for agentic systems processing trade data in real time
• Lead design of ingestion, document understanding, entity resolution, inference and routing
• Fine-tune models using analyst feedback and production outcomes
• Build observability, evals, tracing and feedback loops to catch regressions
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical bar across Engineering
• Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, product managers and customers to ship capabilities
