Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Senior Staff Product Engineer in Growth Onboarding to own the end-to-end onboarding experience. You’ll ship new AI-powered entry points across web, SMS, and third-party assistants, turning signups into activated customers.

You’ll collaborate with Product, Design, and Data, move fast with prototypes over docs, and mentor engineers to raise the bar while delivering measurable impact for 500,000+ small businesses.

Qualifications

• 10-12+ years of software engineering experience with customer-facing products.
• Experience applying AI/LLM capabilities to real product problems.
• Founder mindset with ownership and bias toward action.
• Strong full-stack fundamentals across frontend, backend, and data.
• Ability to ship, measure, and iterate with high quality.

Responsibilities

• Own signup-to-activation experience end to end — data model to UI.
• Invent net-new, 0-to-1 onboarding experiences using AI.
• Partner with Product, Design, and Data to frame problems and test hypotheses.
• Identify where AI reduces customer effort and integrate accordingly.
• Design onboarding as modular building blocks for rapid expansion.
• Raise engineering bar through direction, code quality, reviews, and mentorship.
• Make scoped decisions and iterate quickly.
