Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a capable supervisor to oversee a security shift, directing duty activities and ensuring compliance with state laws and agency policies in a level two facility.

You will supervise perimeters and security controls, prepare and monitor reports, train subordinates, and manage weapons and security devices. A strong background in correctional settings is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and six years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including two years of supervisory experience.
• Degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 years).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Schedules, directs and manages the employment and duty activities of a security shift engaged in the security operations of a level two facility.
• Supervises, inspects, and ensures proper perimeter and internal security and control measures are in effect and enforced.
• Prepares, submits, and monitors reports required by the chain of command and policy.
• Directs and redirects security resources for optimum security and safety.
• Ensure that institutional buildings and state property are properly secured.
• Trains, develops, instructs, evaluates, and counsels subordinates to ensure duty performance is in accordance with state laws and agency policies.
• Ensures proper control, issues and use of weapons, keys, security devices and agency equipment.
• Inspects all posts where shift employees are deployed.
• Interviews and counsels inmates as necessary to ensure maximum safety and security.
